Flying Foxes - Our Nightly Visitors

Every night around 8:30 (like clockwork) we can step out onto our back deck and look up in the sky to - hopefully - catch a glimpse of a flying fox or maybe two. These "mega bats" are commuting back to Bomaderry (across the river) to a huge colony (or whatever a group of flying foxes are called) located there.

It was pretty exciting to begin with...and then we went into Nowra to St. Michael's "Meet the Teacher" night. As Liam, Bryce and I were waiting for Chy-Anne to finish speaking with the last of her parents - we looked up into the clear night sky. This is what we saw...

There had to be thousands. Certainly more than the 1 or 2 a night that we were excited to spot.

I just love Bryce's comment: "it's a whole school going on a field trip" (we were talking about how they were travelling back and forth from past Nowra to Bomaderry:) Very cute!

Just another of the incredible animals we see here!

  1. They are neat to watch. Their is a colony in The Blue Mountains that is said to be one of the largest in the world.

  2. Have to look into that, Clay. Would love to see them up close - hard when it's dusk and they're above you.
